From readings of Lovecraft (whichever you choose I suppose, based on what god you are most interested in) you can then branch out into other works. It is perfectly fine if you begin with pop culture analysis— gods might even choose to appear to you in forms from popular culture, especially if you ask first.

If you are highly interested in the Yellow Mythos or The King in Yellow, you will want to read The Stranger, An Inhabitant of Carcosa, and Haita the Shepherd, by Ambrose Bierce. These are all contained in Can Such Things Be? , all located in the back of the book.
